How long the day
When we were four
When summer was not a season
But a lifetime
When every field of green
Was a possible playground
We skipped rocks in hopes
Of meeting the stream
Baring our toes
Baring our smiles
And caring not about the time
How small our hands
How large our eyes
When we were four
When rain fell down
And soaked our hair
But we didn’t care
As it dropped like freckles
Unto our cheeks
We followed butterflies into blossoms
Blossoms into bees
Never weary of their sting
Always content to follow them
From pretty to pretty
How sweet the smells
How tart the taste
When we were four
When dolls were friends
And friends were true
We held tea parties
And toasted lollipops
To the moon
How simple life
How lasting love
How free the heart
When we were four
